SHORT COMMUNICATIONS G. R. RAD1): Feeding comparison of Rhabditis oxycerca (Nematoda: Rhab- ditidae) The pulsations of the pharynx in Rhabditis oxycerca were counted as a possible measure of feeding rate (Rad, 1991). This was further tested with carmine par- ticles (control) and compared with two rhabditid nematodes, Panagrolaimus sp. and Acrobeloides sp., from Dr. W. L. Nicholas, Division of Botany & Zoology, School of Life Sciences, Australian National University, Canberra. The nematodes were cultured on nutrient agar with bacterial food (E. coli K-12) at 20 ° C . Adults were taken from the culture medium and placed on microscope slides with varying concentrations of carmine particles and bacterial cells. The pulsations of the pharynx were counted from video recordings. Male and female pulsations were not differentiated. _ Fig. 1. Pulsations of pharynx in R. oxycerca. Minor feeding (foraging) observed with carmine (Fig. 1) suggests that parti- cle density may stimulate some feeding response. A comparison of pulsations for different rhabditids (Fig. 2) shows that the feeding rate
