ELEMENTAL DISTRIBUTION IN TISSUES OF PLANTS HEAVILY INFECTED WITH NEMATODES BY D. R. VIGLIERCHIO Division of Nematology, University of California, Davis, CA 95616, U.S.A. Sugarbeet and Brussels sprout plants were inoculated with Heterodera schachtii, Meloidogyne incognita, M. hapla, and M. javanica and watered with half-strength Hoagland nutrient or half- strength Hoagland nutrient containing selected heavy metals. Tomatoes were inoculated with M. incognita, M. hapla and M. javanica and watered with half-strength Hoagland nutrient. Plants were harvested when the nematode burden became very heavy. Leaf blade, petiole and root samples were taken, dried and ground to powder for elemental analysis. Nematodes were col- lected, dried and analyzed. Of more than 20 elements sought by α -particle induced X-ray emis- sion, 19 were found. In the extraction process, potassium was leached from roots. Elemental distribution in tissues was found to be affected by host, mineral nutrition and nematode species. Elemental levels in nematodes were also found to be dependent upon the nematode species, the host plant and the mineral nutrition of plants.
