Comparison Between Plant-Parasitic Nematode Species Associations in Great Britain and in Belgium

Ledeganckstraat 35, B-9000 Gent, Belgium Data from Great Britain (4066 records) and from Belgium (2015 records) have been analysed for species associations by several techniques (contingency Chi-squared, Schluter's variance ratio test and cluster analysis). Of the twenty nine species of Trichodoridae and Longidoridae occurring in one or both countries particular attention was given to eight common to both and of frequent occurrence. The comparison of species associations in the Longidorids between the countries showed that X. diversicaudatum, L. goodeyi and L. leptocephalus were similar but L. elongatus and L. caespiticola differed. Associations between the trichodorids were broadly similar except for T. viruliferus and P. teres which showed different affinities in the two countries. Associations measured by Chi-squared were generally higher in Great Britain than in Belgium. Schluter's variance ratio for the total records in each country, and for the positive records only, confirmed highly significant associations between species.
