NULLONCHUS, A NEW GENUS OF TOOTHLESS MONONCHS, WITH COMMENTS ON THE PHYLOGENETIC RELATIONSHIP OF NULLONCHINAE N. SUBFAM. (NEMATODA: MONONCHIDA) BY MOHAMMAD RAFIQ SIDDIQI Commonwealth Institute of Parasitology, 395A Hatfield Road, St. Albans, England Nullonchus n. gen. is proposed for three new species of toothless mononchs from the Colombian rain forest. Nullonchus levistomus n. sp. (type-species), N. rapax n. sp. and N. valens n. sp. are described and illustrated. The new subfamily Nullonchinae is unique among the Mononchida in lacking teeth, denticles or ridges. It is assigned to Anatonchidae and its phylogenetic relationship is discussed. A single, anteriorly placed dorsal tooth is considered an ancestral character of the Mononchida, in contrast to the three-tooth condition as previously believed. Keywords: taxonomy, descriptions, soil nematodes, Colombia, rain forest. Toothless mononchs, representing a new genus and a new subfamily, were recovered from samples collected in the Colombian rain forest by Ms. Kate Williamson during the Colombian Amazonas Expedition, 1977. The genus is named Nullonchu.s as it lacks any teeth or denticles, but other- wise the stoma is typically mononchoid as are the lip region, oesophagus and other body structures.
