Hatching of Heterodera Carotae and H. Avenae

Hatching of Heterodera Carotae and H. Avenae HATCHING OF HETERODERA CAROTAE AND H. AVENAE BY N. GRECO Istituto di Nematologia Agraria, C.N.R. - 70126 Bari, Italy Hatching tests were done in Southern Italy using cysts of Heterodera carotae and H. avenae, and egg sacs of H. carotae. Juveniles hatched from eggs in newly formed cysts of the first species after 2 months whereas eggs in H. avenae cysts and H. carotae eggs sacs hatched promptly. High summer temperatures inhibited hatching but it commenced again in autumn, when the temperature dropped. Emergence from cysts of H. carotae was stimulated only by host plant root diffusate when incubated at a suitable temperature. The emergence of juveniles from cysts of Heterodera spp. is influenced by root diffusates, soil temperature, soil water content, soil aeration (Shepherd, 1962; Clarke & Perry, 1977) and cyst age (Ellenby & Smith, 1967). Although much work has been done, the process is still poorly understood. Therefore hatching tests were done to provide information on hatching of an Italian population of H. carotae Jones and H. avenae Woll. MATERIALS AND METHODS H. carotae. For H. carotae the hatching solution was leached from field soil planted with carrot (Daucus carota L.), 3 1 from 30 1 http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Nematologica Brill
