SHORT COMMUNICATIONS W. DECRAEMER *), W. A. COOLEN **) & G. J. HENDRICKX **) : Evaluation of extraction methods for a survey of Trichodoridae in fields of seed potatoes. No information has yet been published about the distribution of Trichodoridae in Belgium. We therefore surveyed fields of seed potatoes in East and West Flan- ders in 1978. 233 soil samples were taken in West Flanders and 110 in East Flanders. Sampling was carried out in February, March and April and was done with a 3 cm diameter core (length 30 cm) from points evenly scattered over the field. Each sample was about 2 kg of soil collected from an area of about 80 ares. Nematodes were extracted by the centrifugal-flotation method (Gooris & D'Herde, 1972). As there were no quantitative and qualitative data on the effect of separation fluids on Trichodoridae using this technique, an experiment was set up to compare solutions of sucrose, MgS04 (Hendrickx et al., 1976) and a col- loidal solution of silica, Ludox LS (Coolen & D'Herde, 1977), all at the same density of 1.16. As a reference, the elutriation cotton-wool-filter method (Oosten- brink, 1960 ) was used. The test soil was a sandy
