CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SPECIFIC BACTERIUM ASSOCIATED WITH HETERORHABDITIS BACTERIOPHORA (HETERORHABDITIDAE: RHABDITIDA) BY GEORGE O. POINAR, Jr., GERARD M. THOMAS and ROBERTA HESS Department of Entomology and Parasitology, University of California, Berkeley, California, U.S.A. 94720 The infective stage juveniles of Heterorhabditis bacteriophora Poinar (Heterorhabditidae: Rhab- ditida) carry a specific bacterium in the lumen of their pharynx and intestine. The bacterial cells are large, motile, peritrichously flagellated, gram negative, non-sporeforming rods. They are released by the infective-stage juveniles after they reach the hemolymph of susceptible insects. Additional cultural and biological characteristics of the specific bacterium are presented. Few parasites are known to carry bacteria into their hosts. Most parasitic nema- todes develop in the absence of foreign microorganisms, since the latter could be deleterious to the host and thus indirectly affect the nematode's development. One exception to this occurs with entomogenous nematodes of the genus Neo- aplectana. The infective stage juveniles of Neoaplectana spp. carry specific bacteria into their host's body cavity. The mutualistic association between N6'<M?/6'rA?? carpocäpsae Weiser and Achromobac-ter nenzatophilu.c Poinar & Thomas has been described (Poinar & Thomas, 1966). Two newly described nematodes, Heterorbabditi.r bacteriophora Poinar ( 1975 ) and Heterorhabditi.r heliothidi.r (Khan, Brooks & Hirschmann) (=
