Paratrichodorus Lobatus Associated With Citrus, Peach and Apricot Trees in South Australia

Paratrichodorus Lobatus Associated With Citrus, Peach and Apricot Trees in South Australia PARATRICHODORUS LOBATUS ASSOCIATED WITH CITRUS, PEACH AND APRICOT TREES IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA BY G. R. STIRLING 1) South Australian Department of Agriculture, Research Centre, Loxton, S.A. 5333 Symptoms associated with P. lobatus were observed in peach, apricot and citrus nurseries in South Australia. The nematode was shown to be associated with a reduction in root growth of citrus and apricot in pots, and to feed on peach and apricot roots growing on agar plates. In the field, a significant negative correlation (r = -0.329) was obtained between the height of the peach in the nursery and numbers of P. lobatus associated with those trees. No significant cor- relation was obtained between the size of citrus trees and P. lobatus numbers. The stubby root nematode, Paratrichodorus lobatus (Colbran) which is frequently present in South Australia's peach orchards (Stirling, 1975 ) also occurs in its citrus orchards and in about half the citrus, apricot and peach nurseries. Symptoms possibly caused by P. lobatus have been observed in nurseries, where the nematode is often present in high numbers. Citrus trees growing in soil con- taining P. lobatus populations of about 1500 per 500 g soil had severely stunted feeder roots.
