A root lesion nematode parasitic on cotton in the Gezira

The presence of the nematode in high densities (100 or more nematodes/200 g soil) was indica'ted by stunted plant growth and necr:otic roots of the cotton grown at the GRS. Also the presence of the nematode seems to be associated with a pathogenic fungus, Fu.rarium oxy.rporum f. i!asinfectum Atk., causing vascular wilt of cotton. In glass-house tests undertaken by the author in collaboration with the mycologist at the GRS, the final proportion of wilted plants grown in pots to which both fungus and nematode were added was higher (37/67) compared with that in pots where the fungus alone was introduced (24/66) (Yassin & El Nur, 1969). Also, in these tests wilt occurred 2 weeks earlier in the presence of the nematode.
