Heyns has pointed out to us that the name Hirschmannia, which we erected in 1962 (Luc & Goodey, 1962) for some species originally in Radopholus, is preoccupied by a Crustacean (Elofson, 1941). Accordingly we change the name for the nematode genus to Hirschmanniella nom. nov. with the following new combinations: Hirschmanniella sPinicalldrlta (Schuurmans Stekhoven, 1944) n. comb. -type. GOODEY2): The priority of Tylenchus hexalineatus over T. megacephalus. A new species of Tylenchtt.r was described by Geraert (1962) as T. hexalineatus and by Goodey (1962) as T. (Cephalenchus) megacephaltts. Comparison makes it clear that these descriptions refer to the same species. The name T. hexalinealus appeared in March or April whilst T. megacehpalus appeared on 16th August so that T. hexalineatus has clear priority. We accordingly refer to the nematode as Tylenchtls (Cephalenchus) hexalineatus with T. megacephalus as a synonym. GERAERT, E. (1962). II. During examination, in the autumn of 1961, of cucumber roots attacked by root-knot nematodes identified as Meloidogyne incognita acrita, M. arenaria and M. arenaria thamesi, about 40 females of abnormal shape were found. Two abnormal types were observed: 1. Specimens with a marked, more or less median constriction of the body and the perineal pattern on the convex surface of the posterior portion (Figs. 1, 2, 5). 2. Specimens with the posterior part of the body constricted resulting in an elongated cylindrical "tail" with the perineal pattern near the end (Figs. 3, 4). The position of the constriction varies so that the posterior section of the body may contain parts of the ovaries as well as oviducts (Fig. 1) or only the posterior parts of the oviducts (Fig. 2). Eggs or eggmasses, that can be said with certainty to have been produced by abnormal females have not been found yet.
