The Growth of Meloidogyne in Prunus Persica

The Growth of Meloidogyne in Prunus Persica THE GROWTH OF MELOIDOGYNE IN PRUNUS PERSICA BY J. F. BURDETT, A. F. BIRD 1) AND J. M. FISHER Plant Pathology Department, Waite Agricultural Research Institute, Adelaide, South Australia Parasitism of seedlings of the peach varieties Okinawa, Fort Valley, Stribling's 37, Yunnan and Elberta by Meloidogyne javanica and M. incognita var. acrita was studied in a controlled environ- ment. M. javanica reproduced on Elberta, Yunnan, and Stribling's 37 whilst M. incognita var. acrita reproduced only on Elberta. Neither reproduced on Okinawa or Fort Valley. Growth curves were obtained for M. juvanica in the five varieties of peach; they were typically sigmoid in Yunnan and Elberta. Growth after moulting was slow in Stribling's 37 and did not occur in Okinawa or Fort Valley. Since McClintock (1922) first studied the resistance of peach roots to attack by Meloidogyne, many partiaily resistant varieties have been selected in the U.S.A. (Christie & Havis, 1948; Havis, Chitwood, Prince, Cobb & Taylor, 1950; Chit- wood, Specht & Havis, 1952; Hansen, Lownsbery & Hesse, 1956; Sharpe, 1957) but no reports of resistance to species of Meloido gyne in Australia have been published. In this paper, growth and reproduction of local Meloidogyne popu- lations are examined http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Nematologica Brill
