KLINKENBERG Instituut voor Plantenziektenkundig Onderzoek, Wageningen, The Netherlands Rotylenchus uniformis, Pratylenchus penetrans and P. crenatus fed in much the same way by destroying cortical cells. Pratylenchus spp. mostly entered the roots they fed on except into very thin roots. R. uniformis always remained largely outside the root. Tylenchorhynchus dubius fed on epidermal cells and root hairs, by first injecting saliva into a root hair cell and soon afterwards sucking in the visibly altered contents of this cell. The feeding of this species had no visible effect on the attacked cells. Hemicycliophora similis fed continuously for up to 2 days on the same or neigh- bouring cells. The pumping of the esophageal bulb caused some fluid to flow back and forth between cell and esophagus. Saliva was produced continuously and was presumably mixed with the cell contents which flowed back and forth.
