SHORT COMMUNICATION ETIENNE GERAERT 1) : Corrections of measurements of nematode diameters. Measurements of nematode diameters have a certain systematic value and therefore should be carefully made. With few exceptions (e.g. Wilsonema sp.) nematodes are circular in cross section but they may be flattened in old slides where supports have not been used or in new slides where the supports are inappropriate (e.g. glass fibres used may be too thin or oval in section.) To decide whether a given nematode is flattened, the horizontal 'diameter' is measured (b) using a camera lucida or with a calibrated micrometer eye-piece and compared with the vertical 'diameter' (v), ob- tained by reading the calibrated micro-screw of the microscope. The real diameter, (d), is a more or less complicated function of these two (see Fig. 1). Fig. 1. scheme A: original section of a nematode; scheme B: assumed section of a flattened nematode. h = horizontal diameter; v = vertical diameter. Three formulae may be derived: - (1) Derived from fig. 1, no proof given (2) Postulating that circumferences of the normal and of the flattened nematodes are the same: Approximating and taking c = 3, gives: - (3) Postulating that the
