THE TAXONOMY OF HYDROMERMIS CONTORTA (LINSTOW, 1889) HAGMEIER, 1912, AND ITS SYNONYM HYDROMERMIS RIVICOLA CORTI, 1902, (NEMATODA: MERMITHIDAE) WITH NOTES ON SOME DIAGNOSTIC CHARACTERS BY H. E. WELCH Entomology Research Institute for Biological Control, Research Branch, Canada Department of Agriculture, Belleville, Ontario, Canada KOHN'S ( 1905) emendation of Mermis contorta Linstow, 1889, initiated a controversy that probably will continue for a long time in mermithid literature. My contribution to this debate is based on specimens from the Lea River, Harpen- den, Herts., England, type specimens from Germany, and an examination of the literature. Mermis contorta was described from one immature male and female, and three mature females collected in a ditch at G6ttingen, Germany. KOHN (1905) des- cribed material from C,hironomu.r plumo.ru.r (L.) collected in Austria. His speci- mens differed from Linstow's in the number of longitudinal chords and the ab- sence of cuticular fibres, but Kohn considered these were minor differences, or errors on Linstow's part and believed his and Linstow's material were the same species. He also transferred Linstow's species to Paramermi.r Linstow, 1898, and criticized Corti's erection of Hydromermi.r in 1902. LINSTOW (1905) and CORTI (1906) defended their observations, the latter proposing the name Hydromermi.r
