SAUER Commonwealth Research Station, Merbein, Victoria, Australia For some years the Commonwealth Research Station, Merbein, has maintained a plot of land in uncleared mallee forest near Lake Mourn- pool, Hattah, Victoria, where observations on the growth of native vegetation are made periodically. The region is semi-arid (rainfall about 25 cm. per year), with very sandy soils.
