The Hatching Response of Heterodera Major (O. Schmidt) To Certain Root Diffusates

The Hatching Response of Heterodera Major (O. Schmidt) To Certain Root Diffusates THE HATCHING RESPONSE OF HETERODERA MAJOR (O. SCHMIDT) TO CERTAIN ROOT DIFFUSATES *) BY J. J. HESLING (Rothamsted Experimental Station, Harpenden, Herts.) It is well known that the larvae of most species of I-leterodera can be stimulated to hatch and emerge from the cysts which contain them when the latter are placed in leachings from the roots of some of their host plants. These leachings are usually referred to as "root diffusa- tes". Since the work of TRIFFITT ( 1930) many workers have attempted to assess the effect of various root diffusates on the eggs of several species of Heterodera. There are, however, some species which show no hatching response to treatment with host plant root diffusate, namely, Heterodera major O. Schmidt and Heterodera gottingiana Liebscher. Recent work (?VINSLOW 1955, HESLING 1956) has shown that if the eggs in the cysts of H. major are dried, their hatchability in water is reduced. A similar effect of drying is found with H. schachtii (WALLACE 1955) and with H. glycines (SPEARS I956 ) and is probably also to be found with other species of Heterodera. Cysts of Ileterodera are often obtained by flotation from dried soil. As it was possible http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Nematologica Brill
