© Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2011 ZUTOT 7.1 Also available online – brill.nl/zuto A NEW FRAGMENT OF MIDRASH TANHUMA FROM COLOGNE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Andreas Lehnardt University of Mainz The research project ‘Genizat Germania’ at the chair for Judaic Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, has already brought to light several hundred unknown and unidentified Hebrew manuscripts found in the bindings of books and files throughout Germany. 1 Some of the noteworthy findings have already been published in several articles and books. Most of these Hebrew fragments contain previously known texts or versions of texts with only slight differences in com- parison with other manuscripts and printed editions. Apart from frag- ments with biblical, liturgical, and Talmudic texts, the project has revealed several dozen fragments from midrashim. In comparison with other literary genres attested by fragments manuscripts of midrashim are rarely found. Among the fragments found recently an unknown manuscript from Midrash Tanhuma (according to the Buber edition) 2 was identified in the Cologne University library (Signature FR H 201). Given that very few comparable fragments have been identified until now, the fragment published here for the first time will shed further light on the develop- ment of this
