Een embleem van Coornhert als bron van Jan Steens zogenaamde Burgemeester van Delft

Een embleem van Coornhert als bron van Jan Steens zogenaamde Burgemeester van Delft AbstractJan Steen's So-called Burgomaster of Delft and his Daughter (1655) honours a prosperous citizen of Delft well known in his day for his charitable works. The sitter himself may not actually have commissioned the painting. Its composition and related meaning would appear to have been drawn form one of Coornhert's emblems: 'It is God's will that the rich man shall support His humble porters, the poor who knock on his door'. http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Oud Holland - Quarterly for Dutch Art History Brill

Abstract

AbstractJan Steen's So-called Burgomaster of Delft and his Daughter (1655) honours a prosperous citizen of Delft well known in his day for his charitable works. The sitter himself may not actually have commissioned the painting. Its composition and related meaning would appear to have been drawn form one of Coornhert's emblems: 'It is God's will that the rich man shall support His humble porters, the poor who knock on his door'.
