THIERRY DE BYE DÓLLEMAN Maerten van Heemskerck's Family Group at Kassel: Pieter Jan Foppesz. and his Family Tlte Family Group at Kassel, now generally attributed to Maerten vart Heemskerck, is first heard of in 1749, when it was acquired by Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Kassel as a work by Holbein and representing that artist's family. It wasfirst attributed to Maerten van Heemskerck in 1877 - and this attributiorv was endorsed by Karl Justi - but Otto Eisenmann' detailed catalogue of 1888 gave it to Jan van Scorel. The clnoice betu/een these two artists led to a controversy that er2ded only around 1940. Heemskerck's early works, datable around 1530, emerged as a stylistically colterertt group c f pictures, into which the Kassel Group Portrait fitted quite well.
