121 Het schilderij wordt op stilistische gronden ge- woonlijk tussen 1640 en 1650 gedateerd (vgl. cat. tent. Utrecht). 39 Saenredam heeft zich hier te veel vrijheden veroorloofd, om de in noot 37 beschreven bere- keningsmethode te kunnen toepassen. Zo is bij- voorbeeld in het schilderij de viering meer dan R. RUURS twee maal zo breed als de eerste travee van het schip. Men zij er overigens op bedacht, dat ik hicr steeds gebruik maak van ccn plattegrond (afb. 24), die (door Vermeulen in 1920) gereconstruecrd is op grond van tekeningen van Saenredam. Het gcvaar van cirkelredeneringcn is derhalve steeds aanwe- zig. Saenredam: Constructions Saenredam's paintings of church interiors are all based on drawings that were made on the spot. Between the drawing made in situ (hereafter referred to as the sketch, see Note 2) and the completed painting came at least one more stage: the construction drawing. This was sometimes made directly on the panel (Fig. 1, Note 5), but usually on a sepa- rate sheet.
