Abstract

186 Friedlander was very proud of his collection of photographs, which became the property of the Netherlands Institute for Art History by donation. Neither the honours conferred upon him by the leaders of State and Government, nor the homage of his colleagues or the flattery of collectors or dealers eager for his expert opinion inter- fered with the simplicity of Friedlander's "Altersstil", a simplicity which to the end of his life went hand in hand with a supreme sense of humour. Friedlander's status of connoisseur was ultimately based on his habit of again looking at and experiencing the influence of the work of art. His witty formulations did not originate from the study of art-historical literature, but proceeded from his vision, saturated with impressions of the work of art.
