Diana Door Vermeer En C. De Vos

Diana Door Vermeer En C. De Vos 245 An attractive example of such an "Interior- Still-Life" is in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. J. Tresfon in the Cape Province (fig. 1) and, though not mentioned by Hofstede de Groot, is without any doubt by Adriaen van Ostade. In style and colour it is very similar to the "Courtyard with Still-Life" (H. d. G. 916) which by the way is also not signed and which belongs to Mr. H. E. ten Cate and was exhibited at the Boymans Museum, Rotter- dam in 1955 (Kunstschatten uit Nederlandse Verzamelingen, No. 93, pl. 89). The painting in the Tresfon collection is also a "View of a Courtyard" (on oak, 27.4 X 21.6 cm.). In front of a wooden partition we see a pump which separates the courtyard from the stable. Behind appears the roof of a cottage, an old rag is hanging over the par- tition, next to the pump there is a wooden pail, an earthenware pot and a strainer with six herrings, a broom, and an old shoe, a basket and some turnips, on the left a cat seems to be eating fish. The size of this painting is almost precisely the same as H.d.G. 917 http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Oud Holland - Quarterly for Dutch Art History Brill

Abstract

245 An attractive example of such an "Interior- Still-Life" is in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. H. 917
