KNOEF In the middle of the nineteenth century Dutch painting displays a composition scheme characterized by the presence of a component, usually beyond the middle distance, by means of which the different parts of the scene - which, incidentally, are not always the same - are distinctly separated. This isolated and isolating component, sometimes dark, sometimes light, is an absolutely horizontal element in the composition, and imparts to it a great sense of restfulness. Other horizontal motifs in the foreground and the middle distance accentuate this element and lead up to it. The element is not used obtrusively and does not lead to rigidity. It occurs not only in landscapes
