Rembrandt by Himself? 153 Rembrandt by Himself? The authenticity of the early Portrait of Rembrandt with Gorget in the Mauritshuis, The Hague in conjunction with the corresponding painting from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg. On December 7 and 8 1999 the Mauritshuis and the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) held a symposium in connection with the exhibition of Rem- brandt's self-portraits. Three papers addressed the authenticity of the early Portrait of Rembrandt with Gorget in the Mauritshuis collection (fig. i), which was exhib- ited in conjunction with the corresponding painting from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (fig. 2). Edwin Buijsen gave a historiographic in- troduction to the controversial painting, and Jorgen Wadum presented a large number of slides to support his and other researchers' conclusion that the work in the Mauritshuis ought to be regarded as a copy - possibly by Gerrit Dou - of the one in Nuremberg.
