Preface

Preface [i ] Preface Members of the Society will be happy to learn that its founder and first editor and secretary-treasurer, Richard Lee DeMolen, was ordained priest for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Reno on 14 May of this year, and celebrated his first mass on the following Sunday in Potomac, Maryland. Three members of the Society, including our treasurer, Richard Graham, were present at the mass. May the rest of us, though separated by time and space, join in the prayers and good wishes of that occasion. The Society's three lecturers announced in last year's Yearbook-Fokke Ak- kerman at Leiden, Richard Marius at the Renaissance Society of America, and James Farge in London-all delivered learned and well-received papers. This year's Birthday of Erasmus (Sowards) lecturer in Leiden is Dominic Baker- Smith ; his talk is entitled "Erasmus as reader of the Psalms," and is scheduled for 28 October. Arrangements for the 1999 lectures honoring Margaret Mann Phillips (an- niversary of Erasmus' death), Roland Bainton (anniversary of Erasmus' ordi- nation as priest), and J.
