[i] Preface The past year has brought several changes to the Society, most of them welcome and one a cause for sadness. First, we take great pleasure in an- nouncing that upon the retirement of Erika Rummel as Society Secretary on 1 January 1997, Dr. Hans Trapman of the Constantijn Huygens Instituut in The Hague, and our 1997 Bainton lecturer, has become our new Secretary and our first Secretary not from North America. His appointment will enable the Society to maintain and enhance its role as an international scholarly or- ganization devoted to the promotion of Erasmus studies. Dr. Trapman intro- duces himself to the Society immediately following this preface; for our part we welcome him to his new post and wish him a productive tenure in it. This is the time also to express to Erika Rummel the Society's, and the Ed- itor's, hearty thanks and appreciation for shepherding us as our Secretary for the last five years. Of course our chief debt of gratitude to Professor Rummel is for her impeccable and energetic scholarship, which she will now share with us as a member of the Yearbook Editorial Board.
