Promoting the Business of the Gospel: Erasmus' Contribution to Pastoral Ministry

Promoting the Business of the Gospel: Erasmus' Contribution to Pastoral Ministry [53] Promoting the Business of the Gospel: Erasmus' Contribution to Pastoral Ministry* by Hilmar M. Pabel I . T ate in 1519 Erasmus of Rotterdam published his Paraphrase on I and 2 Tim- othy, Titus, and Philemon. He dedicated the work to Philip of Burgundy, who had become Bishop of Utrecht in 1517.1 Although it is winter, Erasmus tells Philip, "nevertheless the cornfield of literature always brings forth some produce." He thinks it fitting that some portion of this crop be given over to a bishop "as a prince of this type of agriculture." "For whenever we promote to the best of our ability the business of the Gospel, to some extent we take up the office of your solicitude." Erasmus is referring to Philip's pastoral office as a bishop. The new Paraphrase is an appropriate mark of Erasmus' willingness to assist the bishop, for the ideal pastor is an important theme of the epistles to Timothy and Titus. In them Paul "paints and represents the image of the truly genuine Christian prelate." Whoever follows the example of Paul will be . less likely to depart from "that sincere and perfect image of a good prelate."
