Preface L e t me begin by stating t h a t the executive committee has elected Professor j L / Leon-E. Halkin of the University of Liege (emeritus) as the fourth pres- ident of the Erasmus of Rotterdam Society. He will serve one, four-year term (1992-1996). Professor Halkin's predecessors in the office of president have been Professor Roland H. Bainton (1980-1984), Dr. Margaret M a n n Phillips (1984-1988), and Professor Jean-Claude Margolin (1988-1992). I am also pleased to announce that Dr. Jane E. Phillips, professor and chair of classics at the University of Kentucky, will succeed me as editor-in-chief of the Erasmus of Rotterdam Society Yearbook, beginning with volume thirteen. Her term of office will be for five years. I wish to take this opportunity to thank the current five members of the editorial board for their unselfish commitment to various responsibilities during the past twelve years. Two of the present members of the editorial board will also be retiring from their duties. Professor John C. Olin (emeritus, Fordham University) and Pro- fessor James D. Tracy (University of Minnesota) will now be free to pursue other academic interests. I cannot express in words my esteem and
