On Another Verse of Erasmus [154 ] On Another Verse of Erasmus* by NICOLAAS VAN DER BLOM EEDIJK 49 is about a book full of printer's errors! The verse is R a g ain from the Epigrammata of January 8, i So?, and has the head- ing "In caecum Tragoediarum correctorem"-on a blind corrector of tragedies. The text runs: Quur adco, lector, crebris offendere mendis? Qui castigavit, lumine captus erat. Why, reader, are you so annoyed at this multi- tude of printer's errors? The corrector of this book was blind. It is hardly conceivable that a printer would avail himself of the assistance of a blind person for correcting proofsheets. So Bernard Andreas of Toulouse (see Samuel Knight in his Life of Erasmus [1 726] and Reedijk) must be left out, I think. For the same reason, I feel, Carolus Fernandus cannot be meant.' 1 In my opinion the verse is a joke, and Peter Meghen must be the person alluded to in the text. He was a copyist of manuscripts, born at 's-Hertogenbosch, where, perhaps, Erasmus and he met during Erasmus' stay there.
