“This book started life as a report drawn up for a Swiss government investigation of the relationship between Switzerland and apartheid South Africa” (p. xvii) – part of the so-called NRP 42+ Research Programme. This statement captures the rationale for the book and perhaps also gives a pointer to the choices of book content, among aspects. While the work focuses very much on South Africa, it is not a book about South Africa, South African churches, or even South African churches and apartheid. It must be understood in the context of “an attempt by the Swiss public and its political institutions to deal with Switzerland’s past” (p. 1), directed by their government to do so, in the context of class action suits lodged in the United States of America against several leading Swiss companies and financial institutions with respect to their role in relation to apartheid in South Africa. Basically, the book argues that “in their relation to apartheid, Swiss churches were embroiled in a complex web of contradictory dynamics” (p. 5).
