It is conse- quently adding to, and enriching, material we have already published – on women, on science, on Catholicism, and on the Church. As we have noted in the past, missions off er researchers, through their archives, material which is unique and which allows us to reconstruct particularly well life in the “north” and in the “south”. Th e topics which can be delved into are almost infi nite and the scope of countries possible to study is equally varied. Th e present issue covers territories as diverse as China, Burkina Faso, Congo and Angola. It deals with issues as varied as single women missionaries, African catechists, land rights and urban sociology. Taken together, the articles in the present issue speak volumes about the importance of understanding missionary work within these various contexts as well as the importance of studying missions to understand generic human, social and political developments.
