Semper Reformanda

Semper Reformanda In 1517, 500 years ago, Martin Luther’s 95 Theses brought about the beginnings of the Indulgence Controversy, an event that many see as the beginning of the Reformation. While this cannot truly be “the beginning,” it certainly served as a beginning, and thus this year has been filled with anniversary commemorations, celebrations, and conferences that sought to consider the import of the Reformation for the church, for European and colonial history, and for the various military, cultural, social, and economic spheres in the early modern and modern worlds. It will not come as a surprise that the editors of Church History and Religious Culture chose to arrange for a special commemorative issue. But the apparent common character of this enterprise should not blind readers to the rationale behind this project. The special commemorative issue seeks to look backward by examining this moment in the historiography of the early modern period. But it also strives to look forward by considering the direction of the various fields of study as a step ahead in the discussion of the modern cultural relevance of Reformation studies. This moment in the historiography of the Reformation is fraught with possibilities, as well as with perils.
