Douglas H. Shantz, An Introduction to German Pietism. Protestant Renewal at the Dawn of Modern... Recognition of German Pietism as an important component in western Christianity has grown over the past several decades. The publication of the four-volume Geschichte des Pietismus and the quadrennial meetings of the International Pietism Congresses have helped bring Pietism to the forefront of European religious studies. Earlier publications by scholars such as F. Ernest Stoeffler and Dale W. Brown as well as more recent ones by W.R. Ward and others have created a slow but steady interest for English readers. It is filled with fascinating biographical segments, detailed primary source expositions, helpful historiographical evaluations (including needs for further research), and brand new translations (in the appendices) of lesser known but important pietistic works. Shantz advances fruitful themes, including assertions of Pietism’s foundation in radicalism, its seminal role as a social, literary, and missional reform movement, and its function as a catalyst toward European and American modernism.
