The diaconate in Germany is still strongly linked with the name of Johann Hinrich Wichern (–), who started diaconal work for disadvantaged youth in Hamburg, motivated by the concept of the ‘shaping love’ (‘gestaltende Liebe’) that sought to save young people. With his speech at the church con- ference of  Wichern launched the work of the ‘inner mission’. His life and work still have an influence on thinking about the diaconate, and it is therefore not surprising that considerable attention is paid to an anniversary such as the bicentenary of Wichern’s birth in , which has been commemorated with a number of activities and publications, and preceded by a congress with the theme ‘Wichern—Erbe und Aufgabe’. The contributions to this congress are collected in this book.
