Abstract

“I think we tried all sorts of things”; with this melancholy but proud statement in the epilogue to her impressive study Gods Predikers. Dominicanen in Nederland (1795–2000) [God’s Preachers: Dominicans in the Netherlands (1795–2000)] (p. 821), Marit Monteiro summarises how the Dutch Dominicans have somehow managed to survive as an order during the past 40 years. The fourth section of the book, “Searching for leeway 1965–2000” [ Zoeken naar vrije ruimte (1965–2000) ], is a moving account of the decline of the order in the Netherlands, with “truth” being exchanged for “genuineness” and finally even for the spurious riches of “authenticity”—it is a narrative of the failure of countless attempts to square the circle. That failure was greatly compounded by the centralist and restorative policies of the Roman Curia and the generally conservative position adopted by the Dominican generalate. (As Monteiro points out [p. 405], the dynamic relationship between these two administrative bodies will need to be studied further as soon as the relevant archives become accessible.)
