Th is American denomination was founded in 1857 by Dutch immi- grants in the Midwest who felt that the Reformed Church in America (RCA), which had been present in the country since 1624, had become too American. Th is develop- ment had challenged the ideal of preserving a pure Calvinist tradition among new waves of immigrants. At regular moments in history the two sister churches considered a merger, but they were always called off. In 2006 another opportunity for this goal arose in preparation of this commemoration. From the outside the prospects for unification seem promising.
