Th is book tells the story of the Muria Chinese Mennonite Churches, today called the Muria Church (Khu Hwee Muria; GKMI, Gereja Kristen Muria Indonesia ), the first non-western Mennonite church to be formally established. Th e centre of early church life was the city of Kudus in the northern part of central Java. Th e book is not a scientific study but a non-critical and apolitical introduction to the subject by a former missionary of the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) who, in the seventies, worked for the Muria Church in Indonesia. It is primarily writ- ten for Yoder’s co-religionists in the US as well as in Indonesia and elsewhere. Th is emerges, for example, from the introduction of “the Lord” as an actor in the history of the church and, by implication, in the history of society as a whole (p. 8).
