At the outset the editors acknowledge their debt to the Scandinavian scholar Kari Borreson, to whom they dedicate this collection of articles. She is a pioneer of women’s history, particularly with respect to their contribu- tion and role in Christianity in the pre-modern era. In the 1990s, Borreson organized a series of conferences on Women in the Christian Tradition from Late Antiquity to the Reformation, funded by the European Science Foundation (ESF). As Anneke Mulder-Bakker and Jocelyn Wogan-Browne assert, these conferences were excellent venues for discussion among senior and junior specialists in the then new field of gen- der and religion in the pre-modern era. I can vouch for that, as I was one of the junior scholars who were fortunate enough to be invited at the time.
