Het werk van den grooten kenner van Klein Azi?, Sir W. M. Ramsay, hoog- leeraar te Aberdeen en te Oxford, "The Church in The Roman Empire before A. D. 170" was wel reeds in 1893 verschenen en van deze "Mansfield Lectures" zag 1904 reeds de 8e druk, maar theolo- gisch Nederland las nagenoeg geen Engelsch. Zoowel dit fundamen- teele werk als Ramsay's "Historical Geography of Asia Minor", ,,The Cities and Bishoprics of Phrygia", als het in 1896 verschenen ,,St. Paul the Traveller and the Roman Citizen" (8e druk 1905) met hun overvloed van zakelijk, uitwendig getuigenis en reeel his- torisch onderzoek bleven hier practisch onopgemerkt. Prof. Van Manen b. v. bleef in zijne "Handleiding voor de Oud- christelijke Letterkunde ( 1900, blz. 24 vv.) nog geheel bij de "Tü- bingsche" constructies van zijn "Paulus I, de Handelingen der Apostelen" (1890). Wat deze waren, zegge het boekje zelf: "Het boek" - d. w. z. de Handelingen - "draagt ten deele een "legendarisch, ten deele een stichtelijk apologetisch karakter. De
