Bowman Sioux Falls, South Dakota Given the distinctive character of the ITC series, it is important to consider E. John Hamlin's volume on the book of Judges in the con- text of the editors' (George A. F. Knight and Frederick Carlson Holm- gren) stated objectives. The title of the series itself signals the emphases: theological and international. As such, the editors write that the series "moves beyond the usual critical-historical approach to the Bible and offers a theological interpretation of the Hebrew text" (p. viii.). In addi- tion to sketching the theological character of the Hebrew Scriptures, the series also attempts to relate the Old Testament to the New, albeit in ways which avoid the temptation to "christianize" and compromise the integrity of the Old Testament. Further recognizing that "a com- mentary on the Bible must transcend the parochialism of western civili- zation and be sensitive to issues that are the special problems of people who live outside the 'Christianized' West," the editors have selected scholars to
