Childs I Many will agree that we have entered into a period in which the analytical concerns of biblical exegesis have largely replaced the older and broader synthetic interests within both the disciplines of Old and New Testaments. The most important theologies of the last generation, those of G. von Rad and R. Bultmann, have increasingly been consigned to the past as the foundations on which these syntheses were constructed have slowly eroded. Contributing to the change in approach has been a con- . scious repudiation of certain hermeneutical assumptions which ' have been attributed to the specific situation of the post-World War II era. It is hardly surprising that the changing exegetical models within the fields of Old and New Testaments should affect the approach to biblical theology. Since this latter enterprise has always had problems in defining its scope and methodology, the increasing loss of an established direction in exegesis has intensi- fied the difficulty of its task. Nevertheless, two points of agree- ment have emerged in recent discussion which call for further critical reflection.
