For students of theology and for pastors who continue to pursue scholarly interests it is easy enough today to col- lect for every sentence of the creed contradictory assertions derived from critical theology. If they trace the summary statements of the (apostolic) confession of faith back into the Bible and attempt to inform themselves through biblical disciplines about the origins of Christian doctrine, they face the same problem. In the framework of biblical research, every premise of Christian belief is also contested and that to such an extent that these premises become unrecognizable. However one may judge this set of circumstances, it is a momentous fact with which each person must come to terms who stays in the church and professes its faith. Basically there are three conceivable ways for the discussion to go. One can speak of an irreversible process of scientific enlightenment which has demonstrated that ecclesiastical attachment to con- fessions is so antiquated that henceforth only a credally un- bound, free and pluralistic Christianity seems appropriate.
