Th e origins of the Jewish and Christian beliefs in bodily resurrection and post-mortem existence are a perennial subject of scholarly interest. Th is new, expanded edition of the author’s reworked dissertation joins other recent books that investigate this elusive subject (also of note, see Jon D. Levenson, Resurrection and the Restoration of Israel: Th e Ultimate Victory of the God of Life [New Haven: Yale University Press, 2006]). Th is edition has been expanded in part 2 to include three new chapters on this and related themes in early Chris- tian literature. While the kernel of part 1 is substantially the same as the previous work, Nickelsburg offers several of his own critical reflections on it in the “Introduction to the Expanded Edition.” Th e primary methodological orientation of this work is form-critical.
