Birch, Walter Bruegge- mann, Terence E. Fretheim & David L. Petersen. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2005. Pp. 485. $40.00. Th e first edition of this excellent, theologically-oriented textbook was reviewed in this jour- nal by Nancy R. Bowen (vol. 23, 2001). Th e book, though not without flaws, filled an important gap in introductory textbooks and did it quite brilliantly. Many decisions made by the authors in that original edition are worthy of note: the decision to produce an intro- duction which encourages seminary students to engage in Christian theological reflection on the Old Testament; the decision to share authorship of the text, allowing it to model, and not only discuss, varied ideas of what “theological interpretation” looks like; and the decision to affirm the church’s historic view of the Psalter as “a Bible within the Bible” by integrating Psalm texts into its discussion of each biblical book.
