Walter Brueggemann devotes 114 pages to methodological considerations before beginning his readings of the biblical texts ( Th eolog y of the Old Testament: Testimony, Dispute and Advocacy [Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1997]). Th ere is a growing body of literature by Jewish scholars in which they explore methodological considerations, but to date, there has been no application of these theories in a book-length treatment. Th ese extensive discussions regarding methodolog y are symptomatic of the confusing state of the fi eld. It is an honor for me to have the opportunity to comment on Professor Rolf Rendtorff ’s most recent work on biblical theolog y, Th e Canonical Hebrew Bible: A Th eolog y of the Old Testament .
