Basingstoke: Palgrave Macmillan, ISBN 978-0-230-24189-3, xii + 289 pp., UK£ 60. ‘Can diplomacy be saved? Can diplomacy save us?’ These are ambitious questions for practitioners and academics alike in the field of diplomacy. Costas Constanti- nou and James Der Derian have taken up the gauntlet in trying to answer these questions. Both scholars have long been preoccupied with theorizing and concep- tualizing diplomacy. This book’s goal is to rehabilitate diplomacy by proposing a new perspective that moves beyond the conventional dichotomy between theory and practice. Contributions from a heterogeneous group of authors were collected in order to achieve this, with each contribution dealing with a different aspect of sustainable diplomacy. The editors state in their introduction that sustainability in a diplo- matic context consists of two interrelated dimensions: the first concerns the ongo- ing durability of diplomacy as opposed to its disposability, especially in the post-9/11 period when the Bush administration considered military solutions to be a better means to get the desired results; the second dimension considers diplo- macy as a means of ensuring
