This is an interesting and comprehensive book devoted the history of sand glasses. The work, prepared by a Parisian family of antique dealers, presents a catalogue of 85 sand glasses and accompanies an exhibition held at the Galeries Delalande on ancient sandglasses from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The website of the exhibition is http://www.delalande-antiques.com/exhibition-hour-glasses/photos-exhibition-hourglasses-past.html The catalogue is splendidly produced, all the illustrations are in color and they often provide the reader with a reproduction of the most minute details of the sandglasses examined. The book aims at presenting “an iconographic compilation of almost all the hourglasses that were manufactured in Europe at the time when they were required to determine duration of time” (p. 10). Although such a goal might seem excessively ambitious, the content of the catalogue is rewarding in every respect. The catalogue surveys the ways sandglasses were made in different epochs, their frames, shapes, joints and varieties of sand.
