S T A G E C R A F T A N D M A T H E M A T I C A L M A G I C I N EARLY M O D E R N L O N D O N ANTHONY TURNER A B S T R A C T Popular ignorance of basic mechanics in the Early Modern period led to many of its manifestations being considered as the result of ma- gical practise. In the theatre spectacular effects were obtained from sim- ple technology, and magicians were frequently depicted on stage. The spread of 'scenic' effects from court theatre to the popular theatre led to a familiarisation with the effects of mathematical magic and so helped reduce distrust and antagonism towards the products of new technol- ogy.
