A Companion to Anglican Eucharistic Theology is a mammoth work in two fat volumes – in size and scope at least, an amazing achievement. It consists mainly of case studies of a vast array of Anglican (mostly Church of England) writers on the Eucharist, from the Reformation to the present day. The case studies are framed in each volume by a methodological introduction and a conclusion (‘Ramifications’). A philosophical analysis is applied to each case study. The conceptual tool that is used to evaluate the various writers is the concept of realism versus nominalism (that is to say, the age-old question of whether ultimate reality is to be looked for in universals or in particulars); some gradations of these notions (‘moderate’ or ‘immoderate’ realism or nominalism) are deployed.
