Th is volume contains fi fteen articles originating from papers presented at the Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network unit at the Amer ican Academy of Religion in San Diego in 2007. Th e contributors come from Europe, North America and Asia and from fi ve major Christian tradi- tions. Th e essays are grouped in three clusters, the fi rst relating to contempo- rary ecumenical ecclesiology, the second to specifi c questions of communion ecclesiology and the fi nal section to ecclesiology within global contexts. Th ese are not, however, watertight. In the Editor’s opinion, Gerald Mannion’s intro- ductory essay sets the scene for any engagement with ecclesiology today. Mannion’s essay confronts what he sees as the consequences of the continu- ing triumph of an increasingly unbridled global capitalism for human com- munity in general and for the Church in particular.
